Recipe for Romance: A Sunset Picnic for Two

By Paula Detwiller

They say true romance involves the element of surprise. Why not surprise your lover with a sunset picnic on the beach?

You’ll be in synch with lovers around the world if you plan your outing for Monday, June 18—it’s International Picnic Day! Not only will you break the monotony of another Monday dinner in front of the TV, you’ll have plenty of daylight to work with: sunset on June 18 in Palm Beach County isn’t until 8:15 p.m.

Here are the ingredients for a perfectly romantic seaside picnic:

Beach chairs. It’s easier to relax when you’ve got a backrest. Arrange the chairs so you both have a view of the ocean, and more importantly, each other.

Small table and tablecloth. If you don’t have a small fold-up table, bring a wooden crate or sturdy box. The cloth adds just the right touch of formality (and hides the box).

Switch-on candles. Found at most home goods stores, these “candles” have battery-powered bulbs shaped like flames.

Cooler filled with ice. Keeps your drinks cold and your food fresh. And it can double as a table or cup holder.

Appetizers. May we suggest bruschetta? It’s simple and quick to make, using fresh Florida tomatoes, basil from your garden, and a baguette from Old School Bakery.  Another healthy option: pita bread triangles and spicy hummus.

Salad. After a hot summer day, a cold salad is just the ticket. Green salad, pasta salad, bean salad—they’re all great for picnics, and could even be your main course.

Main dish.  What does your true love love? Surprise him/her with a homemade dish, or just get your favorite takeout. Everything tastes better outdoors (even when it’s served from Tupperware containers)!

Dessert. Keep it light with bite-sized pieces of juicy melon, strawberries, and other summer fruit.

Supplies. You’ll need plates, cups, utensils, napkins, and a garbage bag for cleanup.

Remember, no glass on the beach, and leave only footprints. Happy International Picnic Day!
