Add Some Dazzle to your Thanksgiving Table!

By Paula Detwiller

Looking for an inexpensive way to deck out your table for the holiday? Here’s an idea: make a centerpiece using Indian corn and a little glitter. Your friends will think you’re a regular Martha Stewart!  (In fact, that’s where we got the idea.)

You will need:

  • Dried Indian corn with husks attached—widely available in markets this time of year
  • Colorful small gourds
  • Spray glue, or craft glue applied with a small foam paintbrush
  • Gold glitter

Apply a thin layer of glue to the dried ears of corn. Roll the ears in glitter. For some of the corn, you may just want to dab glitter on a few kernels here and there. For the gourds, simply glitter the stems.

Once the glue has dried, arrange the corn and gourds in a large glass bowl or a gold-rimmed serving dish.  If the husks aren’t cooperating, soften them with steam over a pot of boiling water, then arrange them just the way you like.

Give Thanks for Locally Grown Food

As you enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend, why not bring your holiday visitors to the GreenMarket on Saturday? The food is fresh and locally grown, caught, or lay’ed (referring to our farm-fresh eggs, of course). And can you think of a more enjoyable way to start your holiday gift shopping? We’ll have more on that in next week’s blog!
