Celebrate Nutritious, Delicious Guacamole

By Paula Detwiller

It’s got a creamy consistency and a mild, nutty taste. It’s packed with nutrients. And it’s green. We could only be talking about the beloved avocado dip known as guacamole. In fact, “guac” has so many fans, it is honored in not one, but TWO holidays: National Guacamole Day on September 16 and National Spicy Guacamole Dayon November 14. Hey, it’s time to celebrate

Sydney the "guacamole girl" at the Delray GreenMarket

(again)!

To help you do that, drop by Anita’s Guacamole at the Delray GreenMarket. You’ll find 16-year-old Sydney Greenwood, daughter of Virginia (our original guac lady), slicing fresh avocados and mixing them with olive oil, chopped tomatoes, sea salt, lime juice, and the company’s “special sauce” (hint: it contains cilantro). She also sells small bags of tortilla chips and salsa.

Holy Guacamole!

According to the California Avocado Commission, avocados contain 20 essential nutrients, including fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid. They also contain monounsaturated fat—the good fat that helps to lower cholesterol if used in place of saturated fats.

Each week, Anita’s Guacamole goes through four cases of Haas avocados at the GreenMarket—a total of 240. Sydney lets people sample the guac before they buy. Just for fun, we asked Sydney, “What’s the strangest thing anyone’s asked you about the product?”

She said a man walked up to the booth one Saturday and asked, “Do you put avocados in your guacamole?” He was serious. She was dumbfounded.

“I didn’t want to make him feel bad, so I finally said, uh, yeah, we kinda have to…”

Guacamole: occasionally misunderstood, but always green and good for you. Pick some up this Saturday at the Delray GreenMarket!
