Get a Taste of the Season

by Paula Detwiller

Looking to cook something special this week? Maybe something with the fresh fruit, vegetables, or seafood you found at the GreenMarket? Try whipping up a Lox & Arugula Frittata… a platter of Curry Mango Shrimp… or a fragrant loaf of Florida Lemon Bread. You’ll find the recipes for these scrumptious dishes and many more in our new, 2nd edition cookbook “Tastes of the Season.”

GreenMarket Manager Lori Nolan shows off the new cookbook!

Family Recipes, Old and New

This handy little hardback contains 192 tried-and-true recipes from dozens of GreenMarket shoppers, vendors, and fans. Paging through it is like reading an almanac of family cooking traditions—from Bubba’s Sweet Potato Biscuits (pg. 74) to Marilyn’s City Chicken (pg. 48) to Brian’s Mom’s Banana Pudding (pg. 77). You can look up recipes by contributors or by category (Appetizers, Salads, Main Dishes, etc.), and pages of Helpful Hints are placed throughout the book. Here’s one: did you know that to keep hot oil from splattering, you can sprinkle a little salt or flour in the pan before frying?

As an added bonus, the back of the cookbook contains great information about how to use herbs and spices; proper cooking times and temperatures; measurements and equivalencies; napkin-folding instructions; even “quick fixes” to salvage a dish when you goof up!

Where to Buy

Tastes of the Season is available for only $12 at the CRA’s GreenMarket booth at the market each Saturday and at the CRA office at 20 N. Swinton Ave. during the week. Or just call GreenMarket Manager Lori Nolan at (561) 276-7511 to order a copy or two.
